The Earth shawl is shaped by a series of increases on the right edge and decreases on the left edge occurring at different rates.

The Earth shawl uses a “short row” turn in order to create an edge of live stitches running down the left edge of the piece. If you have knit the Bonnie’s Wish shawl this will be familiar technique for you. When you get to the turn you DO NOT wrap. Take the instruction literally and simply turn your work around to begin a WS row.

On row 1 of section 1 you work across the RS until there is one stitch on your left needle. In the strand running between your right and left needle you will work a lifted M1 increase and then turn WITHOUT working that last stitch on your left needle. This becomes the first held “live” stitch for your left edge.
